From small talk to big opportunities: Networking tips for coworking space members

Post on March 17, 2025

You might have joined a coworking space for the coffee, but what if it could also help you land your next client, mentor or business partner?

As coworking spaces grow in popularity, networking has emerged as one of the biggest perks of flexible work environments. Coworking spaces aren’t just about great coffee and flexible desks. They’re also hubs of opportunity where entrepreneurs, freelancers and remote workers can escape the isolation of working from home and find a space to connect, collaborate, and grow.

Whether you're looking for a business partner, a client, or simply someone to bounce ideas off, the right connections can take your career or business to the next level. But networking isn’t just about exchanging business cards or making small talk at the coffee machine. It’s about building meaningful relationships that add value to your professional journey.

At workbuddy, we want to help you thrive in the way you work. Here’s how to make the most of your coworking space and turn everyday interactions into career-changing connections, with helpful tips from workbuddy’s Senior Member Experience Manager Roseanna Hew.

1. Simply show up

One of the easiest ways to start networking is simply showing up. Regularly working from your coworking space helps you build familiarity with others in the community. Say hello to the people at your table, join the lunch crowd or strike up a conversation over coffee or the water cooler. Small moments can lead to valuable connections.

"Networking isn’t just about formal events," says Roseanna. "Some of the best collaborations start with casual conversations in our shared spaces. One of our members landed a dream client simply through meeting someone at our regular community events.”

She recommends switching things up and choosing a social seating area instead of tucking yourself into a quiet corner. Spaces like JustCo, The Hive, and The Great Room have vibrant communal areas and lounge areas designed to encourage interaction. Try this today: strike up a conversation with someone at the coffee machine.

2. Tap into your coworking space’s community events

Coworking spaces regularly host networking nights, industry talks, skill-sharing workshops, and even wellness events—all designed to connect members. Attending these events can help you meet like-minded professionals in a relaxed, low-pressure setting.

“Check your coworking space’s events calendar and make it a point to attend!” Roseanna shares. “You never know who you’ll meet: your next client, collaborator or even investor could be there.”

For example, workbuddy and The Work Boulevard’s recent sound healing session, “The Art of Receiving,” on March 20th, is a perfect way to unwind and indulge in self-care, all while networking with other entrepreneurs and remote professionals. Events like these create shared experiences that foster deeper, more organic connections outside co-working.

3. Perfect your elevator pitch

Being able to introduce yourself in a way that’s concise, clear, and memorable is crucial. Instead of just saying, “I’m a freelance designer,” try something more engaging like, “I’m a freelance designer and I help early-stage startups tell their story in a way that gets investors interested and customers excited." A well-crafted introduction makes it easier for people to understand what you do and remember you.

Action step: Write a one-sentence version of your pitch and practice it with a coworking buddy.

4. Be open to unexpected connections

Some of the most valuable connections aren’t always the obvious ones. The startup founder at your coworking space might introduce you to a mentor, or the freelancer next to you could refer you to a big client. Stay open to conversations with people outside your industry. You never know where a connection might lead.

5. Make the first move at events, offer value first

It’s easy to sit back and wait for networking to happen, but taking the initiative is what makes the difference. If you see someone working on an interesting project, ask about it. If you admire someone’s work, tell them. A simple “Hey, I’d love to hear more about what you do” can open doors to collaborations, partnerships, and friendships.

Great networking isn’t just about what you can gain; it’s about what you can give. “When you meet someone new at your coworking space, think about how you can help, support, or add value to their work,” Roseanna suggests. Share industry insights, recommend useful tools, or offer an introduction to someone in your network.

“People remember those who help them. The more you contribute, the more others will naturally want to support you in return.”

6. Follow up on LinkedIn and stay connected

Networking doesn’t end when an event is over or when you leave your coworking space for the day. If you had a great conversation with someone, send a quick LinkedIn message or email thanking them for their time.

Following up keeps the connection alive and opens the door for future opportunities. Whether it’s a casual coffee catch-up or a formal business meeting, nurturing your relationships will help you build a strong professional network over time.

Your next collaboration or career-defining connection could be sitting at the desk next to you. Are you making the most of it?
